The State of ExpressionEngine 2

Since the long-awaited release of ExpressionEngine 2, developers have been building lots of new sites on the platform, as well as cranking out a variety of great add-ons.  Here’s a quick look at what you need to know.

  • ExpressionEngine 2 is very stable, but some small bugs remain. There have been issues with installation, and some minor control panel bugs.
  • Many of the most popular add-ons from developers like Brandon Kelly (Pixel & Tonic) and Leevi Graham have been released for version 2.  However:
    • Some add-ons are have issues with each other.
    • Minor releases and bug fixes are coming very frequently.
    • Leevi Graham’s add-ons require, as of this writing, that the NSM Morphine control panel theme be installed along with the add-ons. This may bother some developers, as it should not be necessary to change the look of the control panel in order to use an add-on.
    • Also, Leevi Graham’s add-ons are written to use PHP 5.2, which some web hosts do not yet support.  At last work, he was working to make his add-ons compatible with some earlier versions of PHP5.
  • As for ExpressionEngine 2 itself, 2.1 was recently released, and of course addresses a number of bugs in the public beta version. Be sure to upgrade to this before addressing any bugs.
  • Add-on development is easier than ever now that developers can work on the CodeIgniter platform.
